MONSTERS UNIVERSITY Blu-ray Review

Monsters Inc. is one of those movies you remember seeing in theaters. I remember watching it while in Chicago at a cool little mom and pop theater and loved it. I missed Monsters University in theaters, but I am glad I had the chance to check it out on Blu-ray. The two-disc Blu-ray/DVD combo pack has an astounding amount of special features.

Directed by Dan Scanlon (Cars) and produced by Kori Rae (Up, The Incredibles, Monsters Inc.). Billy Crystal and John Goodman return as Mike Wazowski and Sulley respectively. Monsters University also features the voices of Steve Buscemi, Frank Oz, John Ratzenberger, Hellen Mirren, Tyler Labine, Aubrey Plaza, Joel Murray and more.

The prequel follows Mike Wazowski as he enters college to learn to be the best Scarer at Monsters University, his life-long dream. Things change when Mike meets a natural born Scarer, James P. Sullivan, “Sulley”. Mike and Sulley become competitive and are constantly trying to one-up one another. As a result they are both kicked out of the MU’s. To redeem themselves they have to work together to compete in the annual Scare Games and enlist a group of misfit monsters to be the scariest monsters at MU.

Monsters Inc. was funny, but Monsters University’s mix of hilarious scenes and endearing moments make it a fantastic film for the whole family. The characters of Mike and Sulley are great alone on screen, but the addition of the many unique monsters add to the story.

Monsters University does a great job of capturing the college experience from a monsters perspective. It reminded me of and animated and more family friendly version of Revenge of the Nerds with the Fraternities and the annual Scare competition.

Pixar has really topped itself with this film. Randy Newman continues to amaze with the score. This is the best animated Blu-ray that I have seen this year. The colors are amazing and the surround sound is immerses you from all sides. It features an 1080p/AVC-encoded video transfer. The blustering Dolby TrueHD 7.1 surround track sounds amazing.

There is almost an hour of special features included on this two-disc set that take you inside the making of the film. Check them out below:

  • The Blue Umbrella
  • Audio Commentary
  • Campus Life
  • Story School
  • Scare Games
  • Monthropology
  • Welcome to MU
  • Music Appreciation
  • Scare Tactics
  • Color and Light
  • Paths to Pixar: MU Edition
  • Furry Monsters: A Technical Retrospective
  • Deleted Scenes
  • Promo Picks
  • Set Flythroughs

Monsters University tops the list of my favorite Pixar movies and is the best animated film of the year. The Blu-ray  is available for purchase now on Amazon.
