This week Marvel announced that there will be a new Captain America beginning in November 2014 in the pages of All-New Captain America, oddly enough. Your new Cap is none other than Sam Wilson, better known as Falcon, and introduced most recently on the silver screen in this summer’s huge Marvel hit, Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
This is an intriguing move on many fronts for the Marvel comic book universe. Firstly, and perhaps most importantly, this move gives us our first ever black Captain America. This is a huge leap forward for comics, usually not ones to stray from the true heritage of their decades-old heroes, many of which were created long before segregation was done away with.
And while this isn’t the first time Steve Rogers has been replaced, it is the first time Marvel has done so while moving Rogers’ story along. This move also moves the story of Steve Rogers along in the right fashion: he is aging. Captain America is aging. Although he is a super-soldier with enhanced genetics, he still ages, and now he must relinquish the shield and step to the side while Sam Wilson steps forward and takes the mantle of America’s greatest hero.
Fans, are you excited for a new Captain America?
