Monday evening it was revealed that Robert Downey, Jr. has joined the cast of the next Captain America film, which is now believed to be based on the fantastic Civil War storyline from the comics almost 10 years ago. Downey Jr. will reprise his role as Iron Man, returning to the world of Marvel solo films following the next Avengers film, Age Of Ultron.
This is a huge announcement from Marvel and for their Cinematic Universe, which is also believed to be wrapping up after Phase 3, a time when we will see the end of the current Avengers lineup and cast. The Civil War storyline divides the Marvel Universe, pitting Captain America and Iron Man at odds over the U.S. government’s new mandate to register all superheroes, and includes one huge final twist that falls just outside of the actual Civil War comics themselves which we will not spoil here, because Marvel appears to be heading in that very direction now with the 3rd Captain America film. Suffice it to say, things change in a big way for Marvel following this great story, originally written by Mark Millar.
The as yet untitled Captain America 3 film is slated to hit theaters May 6th, 2016.
