THE PEANUTS MOVIE Blu-Ray Review
You’re on Blu-Ray, Charlie Brown!
Snoopy and the gang are back and out on Blu-ray in The Peanuts Movie! From the mind of Charles M. Schulz comes the first feature film based on the universally praised Peanuts comic strip first released in 1950. Peanuts has always held more social responsibility than virtually any comic or cartoon released in the mainstream, especially in the category typically aimed at children. Schulz was able to infuse everything from philosophy, sociology, and psychology into a story that largely revolved around a dog, his owner, and the friends that surrounded the two. Peanuts is loved by children, but the messages resonate far stronger with the adult audience then and now, with its relevance being as strong as ever.
While The Peanuts Movie is the feature film debut for the franchise, it is far from the first non-episodic special and follows in the footsteps laid by holiday classics like A Charlie Brown Christmas and It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. Not to be stopped by time, Peanuts continues to move strongly with the comic strip running in countless newspapers across the country and the world and following the sometimes hopeless exploits of Charlie Brown and his friends. The Peanuts Movie applies the same thoughts, ideas, and setting as the strip and classic cartoon, and updates it with modern technology to present a 3-D animated world that retains the same charm we grew to love. A painstaking amount of care was taken to preserve the nostalgia with excellent voice casting and even recycling archival recordings of Bill Melendez’s original work as Snoopy and Woodstock-sadly, Melendez passed away in 2008.
Although The Peanuts Movie was not nominated at the Academy Awards for Best Animated Picture-an oversight in my mind-it was a box office success reigning in nearly $250 million worldwide. In case you missed it in theaters, or just loved it, here are the details on the Blu-ray release.
