PENNY DREADFUL adds Doctor Who’s Billie Piper
After lengthy and popular runs on television series’ Doctor Who and Secret Diary of a Call Girl, actress Billie Piper will be jumping onto television screens once again. Piper has been cast in the upcoming Showtime gothic horror series, Penny Dreadful.
Penny Dreadful is described as a psychosexual horror series, and is said to feature some of literature’s most iconic creatures. A large and talented cast has already been announced for the project, including such well known performers as: Josh Hartnett, Eva Green and Timothy Dalton. Deadline reports that Piper will play an Irish immigrant, who is trying to escape “a dark past.” The series will be written and executive produced by John Logan, best known as the Oscar nominated writer of Gladiator and Skyfall.
Billie Piper is probably best known in the United States for her two series run as companion Rose Tyler in the 2005 reboot of Doctor Who, opposite the Ninth and the Tenth incarnation of the Doctor. After departing the long-running, science-fiction series, Piper joined the Showtime series Secret Diary of a Call Girl as the title character Belle de Jour. Piper first shot to fame in 1998 when her single “Because We Want To” reached number one in the United Kingdom. In the years just before the meteoric rise of Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera, Billie Piper enjoyed a number of hit singles (and a few scandals) during her teen idol music career, before eventually making the successful transition to acting in her twenties.
Filming on Penny Dreadful starts this fall, with a Showtime premiere scheduled sometime during 2014. The news coming out regarding this project is incredibly exciting, with the talented cast and crew driving anticipation that the gothic horror series will be a success for the cable network.
