Is Gal Gadot the right Wonder Woman?

Today news hit that Wonder Woman aka Diana Prince is officially in the Man of Steel film and not only that but the actress playing her has been announced. Warner Bros. announced this morning that Gal Gadot, most well known for appearing in the “Fast & Furious” films, has landed the role of Wonder Woman/Diana Prince in Zack Snyder’s upcoming Man of Steel sequel.

In a statement, Zack Snyder stated: “Wonder Woman is arguably one of the most powerful female characters of all time and a fan favorite in the DC Universe. Not only is Gal an amazing actress, but she also has that magical quality that makes her perfect for the role. We look forward to audiences discovering Gal in the first feature film incarnation of this beloved character.”

The Man of Steel sequel  will feature the return of Henry Cavill as Superman, facing off against Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne/Batman. Also starring Amy Adams, Diane Lane and Laurence Fishburne, the Zack Snyder-directed Man of  Steel sequel hits theatres on July 17, 2015.

So we have all seen the news and at this point the internet has probably  almost exploded from everyone Googling the name Gal Gadot. When I checked her out I had to say I was underwhelmed(then I immediately thought about Young Justic and how Robin always had a quip for the occasion, I miss that series). It’s not that Gal Gadot isn’t beautiful, she  is but the simply fact is Diana is far more complex than a simple buxom beauty with bulging biceps. Diana Prince is one of the most nuanced characters  that has ever graced DC comics, she has an attitude that puts her at odds with her peers at times but that allows for a fantastic dynamic. She is the physical match for Superman and possesses a resolve that can at times even surpass Batman’s.

DC and Snyder have taken a gamble with not only the casting of Gal  Gadot as Wonder Woman but with the simple introduction of Wonder Woman to the Man of Steel sequel, is it just me or is with every piece of news do we just hear more heroes and villains cramming themselves into Superman’s little corner of the DC Universe. The more I read about the rumours about  Nightwing or Lex Luthor and now the official introduction of Wonder Woman the more I fear that this Man of Steel sequel will be less Avengers in scope and more X-Men: The Last Stand. There will be no proper depth in the  back stories there will just be a bloated  mess with cameo after mindless cameo. I’m not saying Gal Gadot is the sole reason she is simply the final straw. I’m beginning to feel now, with the introduction of Wonder Woman, that this film will be completely unfocused and will have no proper direction. The exception was Batman because everyone knows him, and everyone knows the unique relationship he has with Superman. Wonder Woman does not have the same dedicated fan base that the other two have. Wonder Woman needs a film all of her before she can be in the same arena as these two cinema heavy weights.

Zack Snyder has now placed himself on a tightrope surrounded by loud, angry sharks. He has to figure out how to balance not one, not two but three Legends while giving them a convincing storyline all the while providing new and compelling back stories to Batman and now Wonder Woman. I wish him all the luck in the world and I hope Gal Gadot is a great Wonder Woman and that the Man of Steel sequel turns out to be more Justice League than Super Friends.
