Leonard Nimoy Reveals He has COPD

It’s a sad reality when we are reminded that our favorite people are not immortal, not immune to the diseases of the world.  Last Sunday we were reminded of that with the tragic addiction and subsequent death of Philip Seymour Hoffman. Now we are reminded that Leonard Nimoy, (Spock, Star Trek: The Original series) has a degenerative lung disease called Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder, or COPD.

Leonard Nimoy, 82, was seen in a wheelchair late last month and has now revealed that he is suffering from 'chronic obstructive pulmonary disease'

COPD is a progressive lung disease that affects the ability to breathe properly; it generally refers the degeneration of the tubs and sacs that compose the lungs. COPD is characterized by two main conditions: emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Emphysema is the destruction of lungs over time. The air sacs in the lungs that allow oxygen to be distributed into the blood stream are damaged. Over time they become less elastic and therefore become less efficient in giving out oxygen to the rest of the body. In chronic bronchitis, the lining of the airways, or bronchial tubes, are inflamed. Less air is able to flow to and from the lungs, causing heavy mucus and phlegm build-up. Smokers with this condition often dismiss the coughing, attributing it to the mere “smoker’s cough.” People with COPD can have one or both conditions. COPD is the leading cause of cigarette smoking in the United States, and there is currently no cure.

Nimoy last tweeted that he just finished recording his comments for Star Trek Fest, which will air on EPIX all day Sunday, February 16. Our well-wishes go out to you and your family, Mr. Nimoy. Love, your fans.
