Out of the Furnace is much more than your typical revenge thriller. Thanks to the direction of Scott Cooper (Crazy Heart) the film has much greater depth. Starring Christian Bale, Casey Affleck, Woody Harrelson, Forest Whitaker, Willem Dafoe, Zoe Saldana and Sam Shepard. The film shows the love of a brother bent on revenge and takes audiences inside the lives of a struggling family trying to survive in a impoverished town by any means they can.

Russell Baze (Bale) is trying to rebuild his life after a deadly car accident sends him to prison. He follows his ailing fathers footsteps by working at the local steel mill. Russell’s brother Rodney (Affleck) returns home from Iraq, and is becomes involved in underground boxing matches in hopes of quick cash to support his gambling and drinking problems. Rodney gets deeper and deeper into the seedy underworld controlled by Harlan (Harrelson), a violent sociopath who runs one of the Northeast’s most ruthless crime rings. Rodney goes missing after a match run by Harlan and when the police fail to solve the case, Russell seeks justice for his brother.

Cooper has done a fantastic job of getting memorable performances out of his cast like he did with Crazy Heart. Bale once again transforms himself into a unique character. I loved Casey Affleck in Gone Baby Gone and would love to see him in more films. Dafoe and Harrelson are both fantastic actors who add to the overall star power of Out of the Furnace.

The Blu-ray features an AVC encoded 1080p transfer in 2.40:1 which gives a wonderful balance to the film’s gritty and dark colors as well as the lush greens of the countryside. A Dolby 5.1 surround track helps to bolster the ambient sounds and the fantastic soundtrack.
