LOOPER’s Rian Johnson To Write And Direct STAR WARS EPISODE VIII

Disney is currently shooting Star Wars: Episode VII, directed by J.J. Abrams, for a December 18th, 2015 release date. However, the studio is moving full steam ahead with other films in the franchise. Josh Trank and Gareth Edwards are attached to direct two standalone movies, with the latter’s to hit December 16th, 2016. Now, we know who will be directing Episode VIII. According to Deadline, Rian Johnson is negotiating a deal to write and direct the second installment in the main Star Wars trilogy. The site also says that he will reprise both duties for Episode IX, but The Hollywood Reporter says he is only writing a treatment for the third installment.

Johnson is best known for writing and directing Brick and the acclaimed sci-fi thriller Looper, both starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt. This will be his first array into major blockbuster territory. A release date for Episode VIII has not been set yet, but with Disney’s desire to release an installment of the new Star Wars every two years, expect a Christmas 2017 debut for the film.
