After The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was released to lukewarm reception from both critics and audiences this summer, the future of the once unstoppable franchise has been uncertain. Sony had plans for two more sequels, as well as spin-offs starring Sinister Six and Venom. And now, the studio has confirmed the next two installments. It has been announced that the Sinister Six movie will be released on November 11th, 2016. The spin-off will be written and directed by Drew Goddard. The Cabin in the Woods director’s rough draft is said to be very pleasing to Sony. “With Sinister Six in the hands of writer-director Drew Goddard, we feel extremely confident placing the film on a prime date in 2016,” says Doug Belgrad, president of Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group.

As for The Amazing Spider-Man 3, the studio has confirmed that the threequel will now be released in 2018, after a previously selected June 2016 date. Sony previously set a May 4th date that year for the fourth film in the main series, but a specified date for the third wasn’t given. Marc Webb, who directed the first two installments, is expect to return along with star Andrew Garfield. It was previously announced that Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman would reunite for The Amazing Spider-Man 3, but both writers, who recently ended their partnership, have expressed doubt over returning. This should please those who were unsatisfied with the last movie’s script.

Interestingly, this plan also goes against Sony’s recent desire to put out one Spider-Man movie a year. Now, it looks like we will get one every two years, unless Venom releases in 2017. While Amazing Spider-Man 2 was far from a flop commercially, it is the lowest grossing in the franchise to date. The mixed reviews from fans and critics do not help. And its impact on the series’ future plans is definitely shown.

Are you excited to see Sinister Six and/or The Amazing Spider-Man 3?
