TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES Sequel Enters Development
Despite months and months of backlash and mostly negative reviews from critics, Paramount‘s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot has become a box office success. The latest cinematic version of the iconic turtle group grossed an impressive $65M in its opening weekend, taking the #1 slot from Guardians of the Galaxy. And of course, with nearly every box office success comes a sequel. Paramount has announced (via Deadline) that the next installment of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise will hit theaters June 3rd, 2016. Platinum Dunes and Michael Bay will return to produce, while screenwriters Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec are also coming back. However, it is unknown whether or not Jonathan Liebesman will return to direct.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 is the latest addition to a busy blockbuster slate in June 2016. The month will also see the release of Uncharted, Finding Dory, The Mummy reboot and How To Train Your Dragon 3. Fortunately, however, the untitled TMNT sequel will open before all of these tentpoles. This move is yet another indicator of how popular the franchise is with audiences, particularly children. It is also further proof that Michael Bay is “critics proof” – despite an 18% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Transformers: Age of Extinction is the highest grossing movie of 2014 so far with a $1B+ worldwide cume
