We have Black Adam, Where’s Shazam?
Well after months and months of speculation on whether or not Dwayne Johnson was either Shazam or Black Adam we finally know who our Black Adam is. He has almost universally been hailed as the perfect choice for the champion turned dictator. Now comes the difficult part, the really difficult part. Who do we cast as our Shazam? My personal choice for Billy Batson would be Asa Butterfield. Love that kid, he was fantastic in Ender’s Game. To me the Billy Batson role is his and doesn’t need to be addressed further. Now for Shazam you have the most difficult aspect of the movie. You need a guy who has the energy and charm of an adolescent and the believability of someone who can go toe to toe with Henry Cavill’s Superman.
I think an unknown will be needed for the role of Shazam, someone with no baggage or anything that can make Shazam their own, failing that I have my own choice about who could play Earth’s Mightiest Mortal. A lot of people are going to say I’ve gone crazy but I think Warner Bros. need to go crazy to beat Marvel. Right so here it is, I think the actor to play Shazam should be Kellan Lutz, right if you’re still here then we can still talk. I know what you’re thinking, really, the dude from the cheesy Hercules movie? The guy that played dead eyes Tarzan? To that I say, Kellan was one of the rare highlights of the Twilight series. As Emmett he was funny, he was charming when he was given the right lines and he had that infectious energy that Shazam will need. There are actual scenes in that movie where he pretty much acts like a kid in a grown man’s body. He’s walking around carrying a tree trunk and cracking jokes, exactly like Billy in the comics.
He was also pretty decent in Expendables 3, playing one of the more interesting characters in that ensemble of forgettables. I do realise that his roles are seventy per cent terrible but I want to give him the benefit of the doubt. One good role is really all you need these days and this could be his good role. Another deciding factor for Lutz is that we’ll need someone who is still in their mid twenties which Kellan falls into perfectly. This was one of the main reasons why Johnson was not a suitable choice for Shazam, for all his energy, charm and believability he is in his forties and we need someone who can possibly play the role of Shazam for the next five plus years. I’m not saying Kellan is the best choice but right now he’s looking great. Give him something fun and well written and he can bring out something really memorable, just don’t give him another Hercules.
Who would you like to see play Shazaam?
