Marvel Studios Mystery Event Revealed!
On Tuesday, October 28, 2014 at 2:00pm EST, Marvel Studios held an mystery event in the El Capitan Theater in Los Angeles.
The anticipation was palpable as soon as the clock struck 2:00pm. Reportedly present in the audience were Joss Whedon, the Russo Brothers (Captain America), and Scott Derrickson. As entertainment before the main event, an organ player sat on stage playing Disney and Star Wars tunes. Many, and I only mean myself when I type this, speculated the inclusion of a Journey Into Mystery announcement. Because reasons…and Loki.
At 2:11pm EST, the event begins with the Age of Ultron trailer released last week. Executive producer Kevin Feige says more than 70 million watched the Avengers: Age of Ultron trailer since it was unleashed upon the internet a week early. “Thanks to the good people at Hydra,” mused Feige.
After the trailer, Feige introduces Joss Whedon. After recapping Phase Two of the MCU, they say that, 10 films in, they’ve made 7 billion dollars so far. We’ll let you wrap your brain around that for a second.
Now for the titles. “We have new news. Comic-Con level news,” said Feige, “Phase three: So far it’s a list of untitled films.” Surely this is a joke. Because it is. Here are the next 10 Marvel titles to hit theaters in the next few years:
Captain America: The Serpent Society will be released on May 6 2016.
Doctor Strange, directed by Scott Derrickson, is coming November 4, 2016. Benedict Cumberbatch is currently in talks for taking up the titular character. Feige says that this will bring the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the supernatural and side of things, as well as into a world of parallel dimensions.
Guardians of the Galaxy 2’s release date has been moved up to May 5, 2017, says James Gunn in a video. He’s also writing and directing.
Thor: Ragnarok is taking GotG 2’s original release date, July 28, 2017. Chris Hemswoth and Tom Hiddleston will return for this third film, with Feige teasing that this will be “the end of all things.” This will pick up right after Avengers 2 and “revitalize the character.” What in the world will that entail?
Next up is Black Panther for November 3, 2017. “Things have already been seeded for the Black Panther movie,” Feige teased. We’ve already seen tiny Easter eggs with the mention of Vibranium, which Panther’s home country Wokanda has lots of. Taking up the mantel will be Chadwick Boseman.
Now… this next piece of news is something I’ve been hoping for over a year now…
Captain Marvel will be released on July 6, 2018. But that’s not all, oh no. CAROL DANVERS IS CAPTAIN MARVEL! Her movie has been in the works as long as Doctor Strange, said Feige. Captain Marvel will be a mixture of Earth origins and cosmic adventures. No solid word yet on who will be playing Danvers.
Inhumans is next in line, which is scheduled to release on November 2, 2018. Dozens of new heroes introduced with Inhumans. “We do believe Inhumans can be a franchise,” said Feige. “They have dozens of different power bases. They have an amazing social structure. And tons of spectacular new powers, new effects.” This will be Marvel’s 20th film.
After all of the announcements have been made (or so we thought), Feige jumps back to May 4, 2018, which he decided to save for last. It’s the “Culmination of everything.”
The screen shows a clip of the Avengers plus scenes from multiple movies; a montage of all the films so far. Then…BAM! You get a screen full of Thanos wearing the Infinity Gauntlet!
THE AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR!!!! This story will be a two-part film. Part One will be released May 4, 2018, and Part 2 on May 3, 2019.
That’s their next ten films in all. So much Excitement!!! But then…
Joss Whedon debuted an exclusive clip from Avengers: Age of Ultron. Reportedly, it shows Iron Man wanting to end the fight so they can go home. Captain America doesn’t want to. There’s also some mention over what to do with Scarlet Witch. No special effects or anything, just two awesome actors having a back and forth about the future of the Avengers. After the clip, Feige ruminates over the choice of naming the third Captain America movie “Serpent Society.”
Then he revealed the real title, Captain America: Civil War. Everyone lost their minds.
Chris Evans and Robert Downey, Jr. took the stage after the clip is finished. They revealed Chadwick Boseman as the new Black Panther. “So do you want to take sides, Black Panther?” asked RDJ. To that Boseman responds, “Iron Man… Captain America.. as much as I respect you both… Black Panther is kind of his own guy.”
“Welcome to the fray,” Downey said.
The event ended soon after with a Q&A from the audience with Kevin Feige.
