Is Angelina Jolie Being Courted to Direct CAPTAIN MARVEL?
In the February issue of OK! Magazine, Marvel is reportedly so impressed by Angelina Jolie’s directing abilities on her latest feature, Unbroken, that they may be considering her to take the director’s chair for Captain Marvel.
Word on the street says that Marvel has offered Jolie a whopping $20 million to direct their first female-led action flick. This may have something to do with DC Comics/Warner Bros.’ emphasis on finding a woman to helm Wonder Woman before tapping Breaking Bad director Michelle MacLaren.
No deal has officially been struck, but an inside source for OK! says that “Having a female director is a priority for them [Marvel]. … [Jolie] never thought she’d be in such huge demand as a director, and to be courted by Marvel after the Sony fiasco is a huge pat on the back.”
The latter comment refers to the leaked emails from the infamous Sony hack by Amy Pascal, who called Jolie a “minimally talented spoiled brat.”
So far Jolie only has a two movies under her belt — In the Land of Blood and Honey and Unbroken, the latter which is up for a number of awards — with two more in the works, according to IMDB. Both are low-key dramas with some combat mixed in, but none are anywhere near the level that Captain Marvel needs to be. That said, she’s no stranger to action movies, being in a number of them herself as an actress. We’ve yet to see what Jolie can really do if given the opportunity.
Another name that keeps popping up is Avengers director Joss Whedon. He would certainly be a strong candidate for the Captain Marvel movie considering his history for portraying female characters as strong and compelling human beings. After all, he has already proven himself with Avengers and will soon do it again with Avengers: Age of Ultron. He also has insight on Marvel’s game plan for being a consultant on a number of other Marvel productions.
