Steven Spielberg is Directing ‘READY PLAYER ONE’

Steven Spielberg, the king of nostalgic cinema, is set to direct Ernest Cline’s cult hit novel, Ready Player One, for Warner Bros. Additionally, this marks will be the director’s return to the studio in 14 years when he directed A.I. Artificial Intelligence in 2001.

“We are thrilled to welcome Steven back to Warner Bros,” said Warner Bros’ President of Creative Development and Worldwide Production, Greg Silverman. “We had an historic series of collaborations in the 1980s and 1990s and have wanted to bring him back for years.”

Before working on A.I. Artificial Intelligence with Warner Bros., Spielberg directed Empire Of The Sun in 1987, and the critically acclaimed The Color Purple in 1985. He also involved with Gremlins and The Goonies in the mid-1980s for the studio as a producer.

Ready Player One takes place in the year 2044. A virtual-reality game creator, now deceased, has offered up his entire multi-billion-dollar company to whomever can find the ultimate treasure in one of his many virtual worlds within a game called OASIS. Over the decades, millions have tried and failed to even decipher the plethora of clues given by the eccentric game developer, which are all based on obscure 80s pop culture references. Whomever figures out clues and wins the game — without having their avatars killed in the process — takes over the entire OASIS empire. Enter teenage gamer Wade Watts.

Clearly there are more challenges ahead, like making the world look and feel like a virtual reality game. Surely we have the technology, it all depends on the human visionaries behind OASIS’ creation. And yes, you can bet your butts that this will have an IMAX 3D and RealD 3D release.
