INTO THE WOODS – Blu-ray Review
Stephen Sondheim‘s Into The Woods big screen adaptation seems to have been in the making for what felt like decades, with fans of the musical wanting a movie for the longest time. Finally in December 2014, the musical came to life on the silver screen. With a huge opening success, breaking records, and more, Into the Woods proved to be the musical hit of the year.
As the result of the curse of a once-beautiful witch (Meryl Streep), a baker (James Corden) and his wife (Emily Blunt) are childless. Three days before the rise of a blue moon, they venture into the forest to find the ingredients that will reverse the spell and restore the witch’s beauty: a milk-white cow, hair as yellow as corn, a blood-red cape, and a slipper of gold. During their journey, they meet Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel and Jack, each one on a quest to fulfill a wish.
Into the Woods was, and remains to be, one of the most memorable tales. Not only is this a fairytale movie on its own, but it’s multiple fairytales formed together. We meet Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, and more. Each character plays a key part into the story, for each character has an item the witch needs to reverse the curse put on the Baker and Baker’s Wife’s family tree. This may seem like it could be a bit too crowded story wise, but it flows together really nice.
Into the Woods as a musical was brilliant. Great songs, great acting, great scenes, and all that jazz. Into the Woods as a movie is just as terrific, if not better! The movie kicks off with the infamous “Into the Woods”, slowly leading us into the unforgettable world this is Stephen Sondheim’s world. The all-star cast doesn’t disappoint either. With Anna Kendrick, Meryl Streep, Johnny Depp (as a wolf), James Corden, Emily Blunt, Chris Pine, and so many others, this film definitely doesn’t have any drawbacks acting wise. I think the different casting will open this movie up to a more wider audience. Older fans will know Meryl Streep for all her past work, while some newer fans might cling onto Anna Kendrick. Then you have James Corden who is just the coolest and definitely one of my top reasons for giving Into the Woods a chance. As far as special effects go, they were all top notch! Especially during the Witch’s transformation. That whole scene was visually stunning. The effects, the lights, the music, everything.
This is a musical, so expect many a show tune. Luckily, Into the Woods is known for its amazing soundtrack, so the movie can only improve upon it. Hearing the actors sing the songs adds a breathe of fresh air into the songs and makes the movie much more enjoyable. With lots of heart, funny moments, scary moments, and plenty of fairytales to go around, Into the Woods proved to be another successful musical turned movie and is perfect for kids and adults alike.
