Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. “Melinda” Recap
Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. was on track to be a fantastic addition to the Marvel Universe, both to their television division and most certainly to their cinematic universe. But ever since Coulson found the lost city of Attilan, the show has felt like it has fallen of the rails from what was once a very fun and promising Marvel television product.
Now that Skye has found her mother, she is learning to hone her new gift. But she continues to be splintered from the rest of Coulson’s team as she decides what her best course moving forward should be. Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. has resorted to taking an integral character of the show and instead making her the key to introducing The Inhumans into the Marvel Cinematic Universe: and they have lost their way as a result.
The episode this week was entitled “Melinda,” with a quick look at Agent May’s backstory and how she got to where she is at today. And what a great story it is. As we met May in the pilot episode last year, she was working a desk job by her own decision. This week we find out that she was forced to kill a child in order to stop the deaths of a dozen S.H.I.E.L.D. agents several years ago, and by doing so, she saved all of their lives. Its a decision that understandably sits unwell with her every day since, but it was a harrowing and welcomed look back at what has made her Agent May of S.H.I.E.L.D.
The rest of the show continues to shine in the aftermath of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Nearly a year removed from the fall of S.H.I.E.L.D. at the hands of HYDRA, Phil Coulson now struggles to remain in control of what’s left of S.H.I.E.L.D.. This is the storyline that will pay dividends in the long term, as it ties directly into the MCU and affects all other movies that are on the horizon, specifically all those involving The Avengers. With Avengers: Age Of Ultron only two weeks away, there should be less focus on Inhuman Skye, and all focus instead on Coulson and how he and his team will influence the coming storm at the box office.
