May the 4th: THE FORCE AWAKENS’ Characters, Locations, and More Revealed

Happy May the 4th, everyone! Photographer Annie Leibovitz traveled across the big pond to the famed Pinewood Studios in London where she not only got to take exclusive behind the scenes pictures of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but she also got to confirm a few floating rumors.

First up is the actor playing the Star Wars’ latest baddie, Kylo Ren. Adam Driver (Girls) is confirmed to be the guy wielding that infamous three-pronged lightsaber. Perfectly blending into the white landscape behind him are the new Snow Troopers! I can already hear the 501st giggling with delight over a new uniform in which to cosplay.

A small galaxy’s worth of tracking dots affixed to Lupita Nyong’o’s face allowed artists at Industrial Light & Magic to transform her into the C.G.I. character Maz Kanata.

Next is Lupita Nyong’o. She will play an all-CGI character named Maz Kanata. We’re not sure on which side of the Resistance she’s playing, but judging from the photo below, she’s among the gallery of rogues, pirates, and smugglers in the new series. In other words, her allegiance can go either way. The Star Wars franchise has a love for rogues. Just look at Han Solo, Lando Calrissian, and the entire main cast of Star Wars Rebels. Then again, they are the minority.

Nyong’o’s not in the shot below, but the establishment that these so-called scum are gathered inside is her castle. She could be our next Jabba the Hut, only less gross.

Galactic travelers, smugglers, and other assorted riffraff fill the main hall of pirate Maz Kanata’s castle.

Next we have Oscar Isaac who plays Poe Dameron, a Resistance pilot we’ve seen in all of the trailers so far. Below you can see him hanging off the X-Wing like he’s stepping off a fighter jet in Top Gun.

Dashing Resistance pilot Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) stands alongside his trusty X-wing fighter.

Here you can see J.J. Abrams directing Daisy Ridley, who plays Rey Something-Or-Other. Included in the picture are more strange aliens that inhabit the galaxy’s other desert planet, Jakku. Rey’s name continue’s to be closely guarded. For all we know, Rey could probably be just a nom de guerre to hide her true name. Like, I don’t know…Skywalker or Solo. For example, that is.

J. J. Abrams directs Actress Daisy Ridley for a scene in which her character, the young heroine Rey, pilots her speeder through a bustling marketplace on the planet Jakku.

You can see more pictures and behind-the-scenes insight in this month’s issue of Vanity Fair, which hits newsstands May 12, 2015. Are you hyped yet? IS IT DECEMBER, ALREADY?!
