Marvel Narrows Search for New Spider-Man Down to Two Actors

A couple weeks ago, a lot of people were under the impression that Asa Butterfield (Ender’s Game) was cast as the new web slinger for the upcoming Captain America: Civil War flick; Marvel was just biding their time to officially announce it. Well, anyone who takes Latino Review’s report with more than a grain of salt. As it turns out, even though Civil War has already started filming, Marvel is still looking for their MCU version of Spider-Man. This time, however, they’ve narrowed the selection down to two actors: Butterfield and Tom Holland (The Impossible).

The news comes from THR who also addresses the other actors previously considered for the role:

“The other four hopefuls included: Judah Lewis (a relative newbie who will be seen in Jean-Marc Vallee’s fall drama Demolition), Matthew Lintz (who will be seen with Adam Sandler in this summer’s Pixels), Charlie Plummer (who had a recurring gig on Boardwalk Empire), and Charlie Rowe (a British actor who appeared on Fox’s short-lived Red Band Society).”

Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige, producer Amy Pascal, and directors Joe and Anthony Russo have been present at all or most of the auditions for these boys.

“There is a young kid [already] running around New York City in a homemade version of the Spider-Man costume in the MCU. You just don’t know it yet…” said Feige in a recent interview. “In Spider-Man’s very specific case, where there have been two retellings of that origin in the last whatever it’s been – [thirteen] years – for us we are going to take it for granted that people know that, and the specifics.”

Spidey’s first appearance will be in Civil War, which is scheduled to come out on May 6th, 2016. Afterward, he will then get his own solo film with Sony Pictures, set for release on July 28th, 2017.
