STAR WARS: THE FORCE UNLEASHED Made $57 Million Last Night

Star Wars: The Force Awakens broke records Thursday night, Variety reports. It made $57 million on its first night, which theaters began to run at 7 p.m. That’s a crazy amount money considering every theater running this movie only had two showings, at least.

To bring to perspective how awesome this is, the previous record-breaker was Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, which made $43.5 million on its Thursday night preview on July 2011. The Dark Knight Rises took in $30.6 million in 2012, and Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 took in $30.4 million, which also premiered in 2012.

There was another movie that opened last night as well. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler‘s comedy Sisters held its first screenings alongside Star Wars, but only brought in $769,000, according to Variety. Youch.

And the numbers just keep climbing for The Force Awakens. Fandango announced yesterday that the seventh Star Wars installment is currently the biggest-selling movie ever, selling $100 million worth of ticket pre-sales.
