Funimation DubbleTalk Block: Week 1 Episodes Review

It’s been almost a year since Funimation started its DubbleTalk block. I’ve been watching since the beginning, enjoying the fast English dub work of currently still airing in Japan series. Normally I would’ve watched the episodes with the English subtitles but this time I’ve decided to actually wait for the English dub. So with that I will start doing reviews of the three shows that will be featured for the 5th season: Dagashi Kashi, Assassination Classroom Season 2, and Grimar of Fantasy and Ash. Of course, there are dubs being done for other shows from this season’s winter anime so hopefully you will check those out too.

By the way, after the three shows have premiered there is a live discussion that takes place on the Funimation’s Twitch channel. Make sure to check that out every Wednesday at 9:30pm (EST). And if you miss an opportunity to watch, you can also check the Funimation’s Youtube page where they upload the recorded episode. Matter fact, you can watch the broadcast for this week’s episodes here.

Dagashi Kashi

About the show:

Kokonotsu “Coconuts” Shikada dreams of becoming a famous manga artist. The only problem—he’s terrible. His real talent is selling the complex and delicious snacks in his father’s “dagashi” shop. He never thought much about the family business until the trendy, eccentric Hotaru showed up. As a lover of “dagashi,” she can’t let his talent go to waste and decides she won’t stop ’til she’s sold him on sweets. (Funimation)

Episode 1 – Umai-bou, Fries, and… / Milk Coffee Candies, Young Donuts, and…

I really enjoyed this episode. It’s a food/snack related show so I’m in. It had its funny moments mostly with main character Hotaru Shidare. She’s definitely an eccentric character. Her approach to and with other characters are the best parts. The story’s other main character, Kokonotsu Shikada, almost gave me the feeling he would be boring but that changed quickly. He wants to be a manga artist but clearly the snack world is right for him. His view from the taste of the sweets to how the business of the family shop should be run just seems to come natural to him. With these two and other characters met in this episode like Kokonotsu’s father who desperately won’t his son to take over the shop, the coffee shop girls who displayed quite well that she clearly has a thing for him, and his best friend who has nothing but girls on his mind at the moment, I see Dagashi Kashi being a real good entertaining show this season.

Assassination Classroom (Season 2)

About the show:

Class 3E is about to begin their second semester! And while some things have changed, the class assignment is still the same: kill their teacher before the end of the year! Easier said than done since Koro Sensei’s made it clear he won’t go down without a fight. Will these students be able to take down the tentacled monster that moves at Mach 20 before he can destroy the world? (Funimation)

Episode 1- Summer Festival Time

Class 3E is back and the way we get back into things is by…..seeing Koro Sensei trying to ship his own students. I wasn’t expecting to see that but it ended up being kind of fun. Though what failed with his students could have had potential with another pairing. What we expected to happened did happen and for the reason we might have guessed. Oh well. The episode didn’t stay too long on that subject, thank goodness, and we see how their training can be beneficial in other ways. I’m glad we didn’t get too much into the main objective of the show right off the back. Let’s us ease back into the characters again. Sure enough in the next episode, however, things will be set in motion.

Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash

About the show:

When Haruhiro awakens, he’s in the dark surrounded by people who have no memory of where they came from or how they got there. As the darkness fades, a fantastic new world called “Grimgar” appears before them and their adventure begins—but first, they’ll have to choose their guild, class, and special abilities. (Funimation)

Episode 1 – Whisper, Chant, Prayer, Awaken

First off, this show has such beautiful animation. Probably one of the first things you will notice. It’s so pleasing to the eyes just watching. As for the story itself, looks like we’ll be on a journey with the characters themselves. To me, this is the best type of have. I’m interest in the development they will have but more importantly figuring out what happened to them to put them in this situation. They don’t seem eager to try to find out that information, at least not now, and are just concentrating on trying to live. From their conversations, you can tell these kids are definitely from modern times. I think out of these three shows I’m probably going to be the most invested in this one.
