THE WITCH Blu-Ray Review

Say your prayers, hug your loved ones close, and stay out of the woods, because The Witch is coming to Blu-Ray on May 17th!

From the mind of Writer/Director Robert EggersThe Witch (also titled The Vvitch: A New England Folktale) was a darling and favorite at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival, winning the Directing Award in the U.S. Drama category.  Despite the positive reaction, the film had a lengthy journey to its major theatrical run-being screened once more at the Toronto International Film Festival before A24 and DirecTV Cinema acquired the distribution rights to the film.  The marketing behind The Witch called it one of the scariest films ever made, with a trailer that sent shivers down the spine of those who viewed it.  Needless to say, the excitement surrounding the release of the film was palpable.

While the film was a runaway hit with critics with a 90% “Fresh” Rotten Tomatoes score, the general audience was left unimpressed, as evidenced by the respective 55% approval rating (you can read our review of the film HERE).  Many film connoisseurs praised the film for its atmosphere, acting, and cinematography but moviegoers looking for an absolute fright fest were disappointed to find a more thoughtful drama than the horror flick they may have been searching for.

Nonetheless, The Witch grossed $32 million against a budget of just $1 million, generating a massive amount of profit and introduced audiences to Eggers’s sharp directing, as well as potential starlet Anya Taylor-Joy.  Now with The Witch being released on Blu-Ray, everyone will have their chance to watch and weigh in on the thriller.

In case you missed it in theaters, or want to add it to your collection, here are the details on the Blu-ray release.

THE WITCH SYNOPSIS
