DC COMICS COVERGIRLS – Book Review
One of my favorite things from comic books is the cover art that is created. I don’t care if it’s single issue or graphic novel, some of the most amazing and beautiful art gets created for the covers. It could be a series I’m not reading but I will buy it just for the art. If it is a series I am reading and I love the cover so much, I will buy two so I cam frame one. Covers are a way for me to have some amaing art adorn my home.
If you are a fan of cover art and a fan of DC Comics, you will absolutely want to own DC COMICS COVERGIRL by Louise Simonson which is out now. It’s a gorgeous 209 page hardcover book that take you through a time capsule full of covers starting the heroine, villains, and everything between of DC Comics.
The book starts off with a forward by Adam Hughes. There’s an introduction section that talks about the history of Covergirls and making it’s way into the comics. It’s filled with different DC Comic covers either inserts or full page and all in color. After that the book is broken into six sections – Wonder Woman, Lois Lane, Supergirl, Gotham Girls, VERTIGO, and New Generation.
For Wonder Woman, Lois Lane, and Supergirl their section is filled with their origin story, milestones, and of course different covers throughout their series life span. It also has covers from other series they have been in like Superman, JLA, and such. Some of the covers chosen are iconic covers of these ladies stories and some that I have never seen. Some pretty fun ones are included as well. Lead mask on Lois Lane anyone?
Gotham Girls dwells into the ladies that star in Gotham both good and bad. There’s Catwoman, Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn, Batgirl, Renee Montoya, Batwoman, and Robin The girl Wonder. Just like the other sections, the book showcases a lot of the iconic covers that we all know and love. My favorites have always been the ones from the Gotham Girls back in 2003. It was a five issue series and Batgirl, Ivy, Catwoman, Harley, and Renee each got a cover.
Also included in the book are comics from VERTIGO, an imprint of DC Comics. It was created to tell more adult stories that would never met the comic guidelines. I don’t read anything from there but I appreciate a great cover and the ones in this book are some of the best. DEATH, Lucifer, Preacher, 100 Bullets, and more.
The New Generation shows us covers from Birds of Prey, Zatanna, with Stargirl, Speedy, Raven, and more. Even though those ladies don’t always headline their own solo series they still get some spectacular covers.
This book is a real treat for all comic fans! Even if you’re not a big comic fan but a lover of art/drawing, this book is amazing. I enjoyed looking through it, reading about the characters that were included, and seeing the amazing work from the cover artists. This is a book that deserves to be on your coffee table.
