TIMELESS Recap – “Last Ride of Bonnie & Clyde”
NBC’s new sci-fi drama Timeless was one of those shows that I wasn’t sure I’d like, but it’s quickly become one of my favorites. Every episode is seems bigger and better than the last and leaves me wanting more.
Timeless kind of feels like a mix of Back to the Future and The Mod Squad, but based within our reality and history. The plot of each episode utilizes a critical point of time in history as its narrative, and the loss or alteration of those critical nexus points are high stakes as they can change the future in unknown ways.
We follow our heroes beginning with Lucy, the historian (Abigail Spencer) whose sister ceased to exist when the past was altered in the pilot episode, Wyatt (Matt Lanter), the Delta Force soldier who can’t seem to move past the death of his wife, and Rufus (Malcolm Barrett) the smart but introverted programmer who is the only one who can pilot the time traveling ‘lifeboat’.
Each week they are sent after Garcia Flynn (Goran Višnjić), our villain, who in his own stolen time machine, is trying to alter history in order to take down a cabal like organization called Rittenhouse, who was responsible for killing his family.
Episode 9 “Last Ride of Bonnie & Clyde” takes the gang back to 1934 to steal a key belonging to Rittenhouse which is worn around the neck of the notorious Bonnie Parker, who is soon to be murdered by the police. Flynn is already there and in cahoots with the cops to get the key.
Before travelling back in time, Lucy attempts to have a dinner date with her new timeline fiancé, who she hardly knows. When she tells Wyatt that the date was awkward, Wyatt tells her it’s only fair to let the fiancé go live out his own destiny because she has no attachment to him.
In 1934, Lucy and Wyatt end up helping Bonnie and Clyde escape from a bank heist, and are forced to leave Rufus behind due to the back and forth gunfire. They tell the duo that they are also thieves and are inviting back to their cabin all the while hoping to get their hands on the key necklace Bonnie is wearing. While smooching and hugging, Bonnie tells them that the necklace was an engagement gift from Clyde. In an effort to make the couple look authentic, Wyatt tells them the story of when he proposed to Lucy, which was really the story of how he proposed to his wife. Then out of the blue Wyatt kisses Lucy, leaving her fluttered and confused.
Meanwhile, at the bank, Flynn has told the legendary Texas Ranger Frank Hamer, who is hunting Bonnie and Clyde that Rufus, who has been detained as a suspect, is a part of their gang. Flynn mention his full name Rufus Carlin, but Rufus shows Hamer his driver’s license which says his name is Wesely Snipes.
Side Note : One of the coolest and quirkiest things I love about this show is that when the team goes back in time, they choose famous aliases from their time, and the poor schlubs from the past have no idea what they’re talking about. In Episode 8 “Space Race”, when the team went back to NASA to ensure the success of the moon landing, Wyatt claimed his name was Agent Mulder. Love me some X-File references!
Back to Rufus: The best line in the episode was when Flynn tells Hamer “Trust me, he’s not Wesely Snipes.”
Much to my surprise, Hamer turns out to protect the rights of Rufus, because he wanted to do the right thing. Hamer questions Henry who is part of Bonnie and Clyde’s gang, and asks him if Rufus is an accomplice. When Henry denies knowing Rufus, Hamer let’s Rufus go. Rufus heads to the cabin to warn Wyatt and Lucy when he hears Henry snitching on Bonnie and Clyde.
In the present, Agent Christopher, who has been suspicious of Conner Mason, follows him and takes photos of him meeting with the Rittenhouse agent Benjamin Cahill (possibly Lucy’s father).
Back in 1934, while Bonnie and Clyde are in bed, Lucy tries to convince Wyatt to move on and give someone new a chance. Her maybe?????
They try to steal the necklace from a sleeping Bonnie but are interrupted by the arrival of Henry. While Bonnie and Clyde talk to Henry, Rufus knocks on Lucy’s door and tries to warn them of what’s happening. Clyde finds them talking and brings them in the house at gunpoint. They argue and Rufus tells them that Henry is a snitch, and when they don’t believe it Rufus pulls out his recorder!! He plays Henry’s snitch session to which Clyde puts a bullet in Henry. Wyatt tells them to give him the necklace, but the cops show up, dozing bullets into the house.
Rufus, Lucy, and Wyatt get away, but Bonnie and Clyde meet their epic love story end and Flynn gets the key.
