POLTERGEIST III – Blu Ray Review
Poltergeist III has made it’s way to Blu-ray thanks to the folks at Scream Factory! I reviewed their release of Poltergeist II: The Other Side and today I’m here with my review of the third film of the franchise.
The third films see Carol Ann (Heather O’Rourke) now living in Chicago with her Aunt Pat (Nancy Allen) and her Husband Bruce (Tom Skerritt). Carol Ann is attending a gifted school for children which seems to be school to help her through her issues. Pat thinks her parents wanted her gone and Bruce thinks it’s all because of the bad land deal Carol Ann’s dad was a part of. Of course things don’t go smoothly for Carol Ann and they, along with Bruce’s daughter Donna get sucked into the paranormal world that belongs to Kane. Carol Ann has been seeing a psychiatrist who also happens to be her teacher at the school he attends and he believes she’s making all of this up for attention. He doesn’t believe in ghosts and because he keeps having Carol Ann relive the incident, it some how helps Kane find her and he’s on a mission to take her away permanently.
I personally have mix feelings about Poltergeist III. As its own standalone movie, I actually really like it. As part of the actually franchise, not so much. Poltergeist II: The Other Side pretty much killed it for me with the convoluted story line but the second film gave it an ending. Kane was finally buried and put to rest. Carol Ann was finally left alone. The third film had better scares for me in regards to the second one, they had no toys attacking anyone and I love the whole backwards reflection situation that took hold of Donna and her crush. If you look at it with actually being part of the film series, the whole play with mirrors makes no sense since the first two had nothing to do with that. Also, the scares seemed more like mind games than anything really paranormal. If you think the puddle being able to suck folks in, an entire building freezing up and there being a snow derby in a garage as paranormal, than great.
Tangina’s death was not really explained, at least I didn’t get it. To think of it, I’m not even sure what she was really doing there except telling the poor Doctor that his sessions with Carol Ann made Kane find her. But also, how did Kane come back?! Fine, I’ll accept that poor Carol Ann remembering the events brought memories back to the surface but how did that bring Kane to life? With that note, either thinking of it as a stand alone movie or part of the series, there are some plot holes / “what is going on?” yelling coming from me. For example what did the necklace that Tangina had really do for the plot? It didn’t really help Pat, or did it?
This film does hold a special place in my heart for being the first Poltergeist film I saw as a kid and I love good BAD horror films but there is a good love & hate with it. I will for sure say that this release from Shout! Factory, Poltergeist III is worth owning on Blu-ray whether you love the film or love to hate it.
The collectors edition release comes with all new art work and like their other releases, it is reversible so you have your choice of their new cover or the original cover. They also included some great bonus features such as the theatrical trailer and TV spots; one of my favorite things from their releases and they have even included the alternative ending as a bonus. Also included are two commentary tracks with the director Gary Sherman and Poltergeist III webmaster David Furtney. Another great feature is the interview with Actress Nancy Allen who plays Pat, Carol Ann’s aunt in the film.
Both the picture transfer and sound quality were great considering when this film came out. I judge the sound by how high I have to put up the volume and if I always ended up having to turn it down with the music score or background noises get too loud. I was able to leave it at one level and enjoy the film without ever having to touch my remote. The picture transfer was great and not distracting at all. Sometimes you will notice the grain levels in some transfers but like always, Shout! Factory did a great job with it.
