Amazon announced that they are developing Lord of the Rings prequel TV series for Amazon Prime. The news came from Amazon purchasing the television rights to make a series based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s classic fantasy.
There will be a multi-season run of the new series that will be produced by Amazon Studios, the Tolkien Estate and Trust, book publisher HarperCollins and New Line Cinema.
Here is what Matt Galsor, a representative for the Tolkien Estate and Trust and HarperCollins had to say:
“We are delighted that Amazon, with its longstanding commitment to literature, is the home of the first-ever multi-season television series for The Lord of the Rings. Sharon [Tal Yguado, Head of Scripted Series] and the team at Amazon Studios have exceptional ideas to bring to the screen previously unexplored stories based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s original writings.”
Galsor went on to say that the series will explore “previously unexplored stories.” This could mean that Amazon will base the series on the appendices of The Return of the King or if the studio also purchased the rights to Tolkien’s The Silmarillion, then the series could focus on anything related to the creation of Middle-earth.
