The Top Stars to Play James Bond. Who’s Your Pick?

Daniel Craig is bowing out after his next film as James Bond and the battle is on among several leading actors to replace him. It is one of the most prestigious roles in cinema, and the chance to follow in the footsteps of Craig, Sean Connery, Roger Moore and Pierce Brosnan is enticing for many stars. Here are the men – and women – most likely to be the next 007:

Tom Hardy

Hardy already commands considerable star period in Hollywood, which should make him an attractive prospect to Bond producers. He has dazzled audiences in high-profile roles in a huge array of blockbusters, including Dunkirk, Mad Max: Fury Road, Legend, Lawless, The Dark Knight Rises, The Revenant, Bronson, Warrior, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Inception and various others. During that time he has demonstrated serious acting chops and great versatility, but he also has the looks and the requisite level of suave to take on the role of 007. He would take it in an interesting direction given his hulking physicality, and he would be a popular choice among fans. He has refused to deny his interest in the role, and that has seen him made the joint favourite to land it. Review the odds before placing action on different betting sites and you will see that Hardy leads the way at 3/1.

James Norton

Norton is also 3/1 in the betting, but he is a more unknown quantity than Hardy. He impressed in TV dramas War and Peace and Flatliners, which landed him the lead role in McMafia, where he plays a disaffected member of the Russian mafia called Alex Godman. In the very first scene, it steps out of a cab in a tux in a very 007 fashion, leading many to think he would be perfect for the role.

Jack Huston

Huston had enjoyed several eye-catching supporting roles in the likes of American Hustle and Boardwalk Empire before landing his ticket to superstardom in 2016. He played the titular hero in Ben Hur, earning generally positive reviews for his performance. He is English and the right age, leaving him the third favourite to replace Craig as James Bond.

Aidan Turner

Poldark star Aidan Turner left housewives hot under the collar during his stint as the Cornish adventurer, and then stepped up to the big screen in The Hobbit. Like Norton, the Irishman has not served as the lead in a big Hollywood film, which could count against him, but he certainly looks the part and would represent a safe pair of hands for the franchise.

Idris Elba

This is a really intriguing option as Idris Elba would become the first black James Bond if he landed the part. He would bring fantastic physical presence to the role, and – like Hardy – could end up taking James Bond in a more growling, brawling direction. Elba has enjoyed a stellar career, starring in two cult TV shows, The Wire and Luther. On the big screen, he has earned strong reviews for his roles in Mandela and Beasts of No Nation, while blockbusters include Thor, Prometheus and Pacific Rim.

The Rest

The next in the betting after Elba is “any female”, which comes in at 12/1. It seems likely that the franchise will move in a different direction after Craig hangs up his tux, so why not make Bond a woman? If you look down the list, the first women are Emily Blunt and Gillian Anderson, both 50/1. Peaky Blinders lead Cilian Murphy looks like a good longer shot at 12/1 as he would be great in the role, while Tom Hiddleston is also interesting at the same price. Michael Fassbender, Henry Cavill, Jamie Dornan, Andrew Lincoln, Jamie Bell and Damian Lewis are all in the mix too and it looks like developing into a fascinating battle.
