It is NEVER Okay to Use Blackface, Especially for Cosplay!

Blackface is never okay, let this post serve as your notice. If you do not know that blackface is inappropriate you do now!

In case you have been living under a roc, Wikipedia notes that “Blackface is a form of theatrical make-up used predominantly by non-black performers to represent a caricature of a black person. The practice gained popularity during the 19th century and contributed to the spread of racial stereotypes such as the “happy-go-lucky darky on the plantation” or the “dandified coon”.”

You would think that in today’s political and social climate that people would know better, but it does not seem to be the case.

Karina Martsinkevich, a Lithuanian streamer and cosplayer known as Karupups recently donned blackface on her Twitch channel to show off her favorite character Lifeline, a medic character from Apex Legends. She was banned for 30 days as a result. Her response was that “It was just for fun. I just wanted to change into my favorite Legend from the game,” she says in the video. She also called it a “very huge misunderstanding.”

Buzzfeed states that “she was found to be in violation of Twitch‘s hateful conduct and harassment policy, which bans any “content or activity that promotes, encourages, or facilitates discrimination, denigration, objectification, harassment, or violence” based on race or other factors.

What do you think about this situation? Do you think that she should be permanently banned?
