Why Reboot The X-Men Franchise?
So many people are jumping on the reboot the X-Men franchise bandwagon. It’s a tad bit confusing to me for many reasons. The first thing to look at is the cast. You have had some of the best actors working in the film industry portray these character. These actors, alongside the other creatives, are responsible for compelling performances that drew audiences to these films for nearly two decades. There have been ups and downs with the films but they have continued to draw audiences and captivate them. Additionally, fantastic directors such as Matthew Vaughn have been drawn to this universe and accomplished dynamic storytelling alongside writers like Jane Goldman. It would be strange for Marvel Studios to completely get rid of the young cast that began in X-Men: First Class. In many respects, it feels like these prequel trilogy movies have only just started with four movies in the whole already.
Actors such as James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, and others still have quite a bit of life in them. They’re still incredibly young and could go on portraying the characters for a couple of more decades. It would be strange for audiences to think of other actors playing these characters since McAvoy and Fassbender have both proven excellent choices and have made the roles their own after the legendary performances of Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen. McAvoy and Fassbender have become the new faces of the X-Men and it would feel really strange to have two new actors playing these iconic roles.
That being said, Marvel has been known for doing this since they replaced Andrew Garfield with Tom Holland after only two movies. This is a different circumstance though because McAvoy, Fassbender, and others have been portraying these characters for longer than Garfield did and are connected to them in popular culture. They have marketed these characters well with a smartphone signal. It’s understandable why Marvel would be somewhat concerned about keeping the cast of Fox’s X-Men universe with the bad box office performance and the sense that the films could have done better. Despite this, some recent films such as X-Men: Days of Future Past have been the best of all of the X-Men films made.
It took the legendary older cast and paired it with the newer cast to create an amazing film experience. So, what is the need to clean slate? What you might simply need are new creatives behind the movies in order to bring fresh storytelling. The actors have not been to fault for the past films since X-Men Days of Future Past came out. It’s been the storytellers behind the film. That needs to change. They need to market these characters with a smartphone signal. It would have been good to keep Matthew Vaughn and Jane Goldman around more than they did since they were not part of the old guard.
To look at the future, Marvel Studios would be doing a disservice if they got rid of the new younger cast that has been the bright light in some films that suffered from bad storytelling or direction. If they allow the actors to portray their characters and explore different directions, this would be a great asset for the MCU. It will be a shame when the inevitable recasting occurs though. The only hope is that they cast good actors in the roles that can bring the same pathos actors such as McAvoy and Fassbender brought. It would be incredibly strange for the younger cast not to return but it’s going to happen, unfortunately. But, as Xavier says in Days of Future Past, is the future truly set?
