How to Choose the Best Video Game Distribution Platform

Creating a game is an amazing accomplishment. What’s sometimes harder, though, is making sure that others get to play it. If you are in thinking about putting your game up for sale, you’ll need to keep the following factors in mind when choosing a distribution platform.

Know Your Audience

The first thing you need to consider is your audience. Where is your audience most likely to look for your game? Would choosing a different platform alienate a significant part of your audience? If so, can you make up for that loss by the new customers that the platform will theoretically generate for you? It’s always a good idea to go where your audience is, but you need to know if making a different choice will actually hurt you in the long run.

Think How the Platform Works

Take a look at how a given distribution platform works before pushing to distribute your game. There’s a huge difference between those platforms that push for best practices crowdfunding and those who are more at home with publishers who choose more mercenary methods. Likewise, you want to know whether you’re going to be working with an entity that’s always pushing for deep discounts or those that are more involved with promoting games at full price.

Pay Attention to Fees and Payments

Most distributions platforms want something in exchange for hosting your game. The platform’s cut can vary wildly not only due to simple economics but also due to your pull as a publisher. It’s generally in your best interest to keep the amount of money the platform’s going to take per sale in mind, though it doesn’t always need to be the most important factor that you consider.

Consider the Competition

Finally, consider the competition you might face. While you might think that getting on a giant platform is a sign of success, you might end up as a small fish in a giant pond. On the other hand, a smaller distribution platform will give you access to fewer buyers, but your game might feature more prominently. There’s a balance that you will need to strike in order to be successful.

The truth is that there is no simple solution for figuring out your distribution choice. You need to weigh the risks and rewards for your unique situation in order to make the right choice. Take your time making this decision, as it is one that will definitely impact the future of your game.
